Xavier School High 1's Site

HomeWELCOME!Jun 23, 2009
Thank you for visiting the official site for assignments of Xavier School High 1 students.

To make possible the continuation of academic work despite the suspension of classes, Xavier School will utilize this site to make information available to parents and students. When students come back to school, they will be held accountable for whatever has been assigned on this site.

While this setup is less than ideal, we have taken this option so that the suspension of classes will not unduly disrupt the delivery of instruction.

We ask for the patient assistance and supervision of parents, most especially parents of our younger students, to ensure assignments made available on this site are accomplished.

Take note that you need not have the site as a contact to be able to view the content. Should you have a question on an assignment, kindly post a reply to the particular entry you have a question on. Please follow this format for posting questions:

Student or Parent’s Full Name (Student’s Grade/Year/Section): Question

Take note that only replies to comments posted by the site administrator should be considered official responses.

Assignments are now complete.

Please be informed that the H1B Climb High Recollection, originally scheduled on June 29-30, is moved to July 6-7, 2009.  The HS CMSO already gave you the letter to your parents before the suspension of classes, however, due to the change in schedule, may I request you to do the following:

Ask your parents to read the attached H1B Recollection Letter to Parents.

Print the reply slip, ask your mother/father to sign it,
and submit it on July 6.

Read the attached Reminders (Things to Bring, etc.)

Please bring all assignments/written output you will have to submit on July 6, Monday.  Your Class Adviser will collect all assignments in your classroom before going to the Formation Center.

Please be guided accordingly.  Stay healthy and safe.  Thank you!

Task: Write a paragraph that highlights one main idea of who you are right now.

Directions
Pre-Writing
1. Using the Quick Write and Mind Map we have already made, select one major IDEA of who you are right now. Do this by encircling key words in both your Quick Write or Mind Map that you think are important. These can be things that you feel strongly about or things that you feel make you unique.
2. Answer the question posted on our Multiply site, by posting your response on the reply section below the blog post.

Writing
1. Write a paragraph that explains how this aspect became a part of who you are right now.
2. While there is no prescribed paragraph length, make sure your paragraph is not too short that it is underdeveloped, or too long that it has no focus.
3. Use a creative title.
4. Post your paragraphs as a blog entry on our Multiply Site. (http://illiterati.multiply.com).
5. Blog title should be formatted like this: Year-Section, Name, Title of Paragraph.

We have provided a printable copy (5 pages/short bond) of everything that's typed below as an MS Word attachment. Please download it in case you want a hard copy.

Task: Composing Quickwrites
A. What is a quickwrite?

A quickwrite is a reflective response to a short piece of writing. To do a quickwrite, simply write continuously and nonstop for 3 to 5 minutes, in response to a selection that you have just read. Note that you may ask your parent or someone else to monitor the time for you, or you may also time yourself.

B. Where do I write my quickwrites?

After reading a selection, compose a quickwrite on the first page of your sketch pad. You are allowed to continue to the following pages if you need more space.

If you left your sketch pad at school, you may do your quickwrite on a clean sheet of bond paper. Please do not write at the back because this sheet will be glued to your sketch pad the following week. Instead, just use an additional sheet of paper. You may add as many as you need.

C. How do I write my quickwrites?

Before composing your quickwrites, take note of the guide questions found at the end of each selection. Keep in mind that you may either:

(a) write as quickly as you can, capturing all that comes to your mind in response to the selection as a whole, or

(b) borrow a line or part of a line (of your own choosing) from the selection and write about that line nonstop.

You do NOT need to answer every question. The questions are there just to help you gather your thoughts as you prepare to do your quickwrite.

D. What format do I follow?

1. Since the sketch pads/sheets of bond paper have no lines, you are free to decide on the widths of your top, bottom, left, and right margins.

2. You may or may not skip lines. It's up to you.

3. You may use print instead of script as long as your handwriting is legible.

4. You are allowed to make erasures & corrections, provided you do so neatly.

5. The use of a computer (or typewriter) for the quickwrites (the actual text) is NOT allowed. All quickwrites should be handwritten. You may use a pencil or any dark-colored ballpen.

6. There is no limit to the number of sentences for each quickwrite. Just follow the prescribed time limit.

E. Are there other guidelines that I need to remember?

1. There are five short selections to read this week.

2. Every day, read just one selection. It's up to you to schedule when you plan to do your quickwrites session (each one will take no longer than ten minutes), but be sure NOT to cram everything on the last day. The activity is set-up to allow you to gradually become more comfortable with both reading and writing. Cramming everything on the last day defeats that purpose.

3. After you finish writing, you may cut or print out and attach pictures, doodle and even color beside your quickwrites, as long as these are related to your quickwrite for that day.

Day 1: June 29 (Monday)

Directions:

1. Read "I Need to Find a Place" by Emily G.

2. Compose a quickwrite after reading the selection.

3. Take note of the following guide questions:

a. In what way can you relate to the selection? Do you remember your own experiences that may be similar to what you have just read?

b. How did you feel after reading the selection?

c. Why do you think the speaker is eager to find such a place? Do you think a place based on the speaker's descriptions exists?

I Need to Find a Place
by Emily G.

I need to find a place
Where friendship never burns out.

I need to find a place
Where I can scream and shout.

I need to find a place
Where love is forever
Where you don't give up - never!

I need to find a place
That is comforting and calm.
A place - where nothing goes wrong.

Day 2: June 30 (Tuesday)

Directions:

1. Read "He Shaved His Head" by Rene Ruiz.

2. Compose a quickwrite after reading the selection.

3. Take note of the following guide questions:

a. In what way can you relate to the selection? Do you remember your own experiences that may be similar to what you have just read?

b. How did you feel after reading the selection?

c. Were there times in your life when you wanted to do something shocking for the reasons that the speaker enumerated? What did you do?

He Shaved His Head
by Rene Ruiz from "You Hear Me?"
Edited by Betsy Franco

He shaved his head to release his imagination.
He did it to get a tattoo on his shiny head.
He did it to lose his normality.
He did it to become a freak.
He did it because he was angry.
He did it to make people angry.
He did it for himself.

Day 3: July 1 (Wednesday)

Directions:

1. Read "Jen" by Jeff B.

2. Compose a quickwrite after reading the selection.

3. Take note of the following guide questions:

a. In what way can you relate to the selection? Do you remember your own experiences that may be similar to what you have just read?

b. How did you feel after reading the selection?

c. Have you ever met someone that you liked as much as the speaker liked Jen? What did you do for that person? How did you make that person feel special?

Jen
by Jeff B.

I asked you to dance,
But you were still crying.
I gave you a rose,
But you were still depressed.
I gave you a teddy bear,
But you never received it.
I gave you a porcelain unicorn,
But you were still broken up.
I tried to be nice,
I tried to comfort you,
I tried to help you,
But none of it worked
So I cried.
And you don't know
How much it would mean to me
Just to see you,
Smile.

Day 4: July 2 (Thursday)

Directions:

1. Read "Just Me, the Ball, and the Basket" by Dipta B.

2. Compose a quickwrite after reading the selection.

3. Take note of the following guide questions:

a. In what way can you relate to the selection? Do you remember your own experiences that may be similar to what you have just read?

b. How did you feel after reading the selection?

c. Is it possible for the speaker to ignore his surroundings as he prepared to take his shot? Why do you think the speaker did that? What could have been going through his mind at that time?

Just Me, the Ball, and the Basket
by Dipta B.

It's just me, the ball, and the basket
The crowd may roar
The players may talk trash
The officials may blow their whistles
But I don't hear them
It's a free shot
No hands waving in my face
No opponents diving and reaching at me
No twenty-four second clock ticking
No eager teammates waiting for a pass I can't make
It's just me, the ball, and the basket
I slowly raise the ball
Roll it sweetly off my fingertips
Watch its rainbow arc
Swish

Day 5: July 3 (Friday)

Directions:

1. Read "Tired" by Gregory K.

2. Compose a quickwrite after reading the selection.

3. Take note of the following guide questions:

a. In what way can you relate to the selection? Do you remember your own experiences that may be similar to what you have just read?

b. How did you feel after reading the selection?

c. Have you ever grown tired of doing activities that you normally enjoy doing? Why?

Tired
by Gregory K.

I’m tired of reading.
My books are so boring.
I’m tired of sports,
All that running and scoring.
I’m tired of sleeping.
Who needs all that resting?
I’m tired of laughing.
I want no more jesting.
I’m tired of eating.
I’m so bored of chewing.
I’m tired of people
And how-do-you-doing.
I’m tired of learning.
It's far from exciting.
I’d tell you some more...
But I’m too tired of writing.

Deadline: Quickwrites (either on sheets of paper or on sketch pads) will be collected on July 6, Monday during English period.
